In a slump after your last Sarah J. Maas listen? Roshani Chokshi’s The Star-Touched Queen has all the right stuff to make it the perfect new addition to your audiobook library. You will listen while you are working, while you are studying, while you are showering… and probably while you should be making human contact but cannot be bothered because you will NEED to know what happens.

This was so different from many other fantasy YA listens that I love, and the differences were what made me to simply adore it. The heroine of The Star-Touched Queen, Maya, is an extremely likeable and relatable character. She’s stubborn and headstrong without being bratty, and she lacks self-confidence (as many seventeen-year-old girls do) without being self-deprecating. I appreciated that Maya’s character development was subtle enough that once you reached the end of the story, you were able to look back with her and realize all she’d been able to accomplish and how much she’d had to grow on her own. Even more than that, some serious kudos to Roshani for writing such an epic journey and to the narrator, Priya Ayyar for delivering it in such a way that I felt like it had hardly been any time at all when reached the end.

Debut author Roshani Chokshi’s The Star-Touched Queen is the perfect mix of fantasy, romance and mythology and would satisfy anyone interested in those genres. Priya Ayyar is an audiobook narrator and television actress in whose very capable hands this text is brought to life. The best way to get the full effect of this story was with her pronunciation of words/names of places/people that may have previously been unknown to me; I may have read everything incorrectly in my ignorance and would have done myself a great disservice never knowing the correct sounds. Her voices for the characters are consistent and makes it easy for the listener to recognize who is speaking and her ability to keep those distinctions even when some of the characters age is astounding.
